Basic essentials for a good finish on the redecoration of a room (Part3)
Step 3: Take a moment to make sure you have all the tools you will need for the next stage. You will need a roller and tray, your paints, a 2-3inch brush, a roller extension handle, a small stepladder or step up box and eye protection goggles. You will be starting with the ceiling so take your ceiling emulsion paint and give it a good stir. The first step when painting a ceiling is to cut in all of the edges the whole way around the room and the light fittings. You need to bring the paint approximately 4 inches into the ceiling and ¼ inch onto the walls.
Once this is complete it is time to fill your roller tray with your ceiling emulsion. Take your roller and attach the extension pole to the roller handle. Make sure that the roller is consistently loaded across its width and with plenty of paint. When loading the roller try to resist dragging the roller through the paint and instead roll it along the tray and into the paint. Doing this will prevent the paint from building up on only half of the roller and will allow an even coverage on the roller. Once your roller is well loaded but not dripping you can start at one end of the room. It can be difficult to see what areas you have painted in certain lights so a top tip is to divide the ceiling into blocks and work your way around the room in 4-5 foot sections. Remember when doing this to always lay off the paint towards the area that is already painted. Laying off is where you lightly run the roller over what you have just painted to ensure an even finish.
Once your ceiling is finished if it needs a second coat of paint repeat the entire process in the same order. Your ceiling is finished now and it is time to move onto the walls.
